Natural Hair: Preparing for Braids & Twists

Hey Curlies,

I posted on the Facebook wall and on the Twitter page that I would be getting box braids pretty soon and the day has come! Well almost. I have done a few things before tomorrow's braiding session just to be sure that my hair is in tip top shape.

I detangled with Shea Moisture Anti-Breakage Masque and then washed using Mill Creek Biotin Shampoo. I conditioned using TRESemme Naturals Conditioner and then deep conditioned with a mix of TRESemme Naturals and ORS Replenishing Conditioner. I also used TRESemme Naturals as a leave in conditioner.

I then braided my hair to let dry over night and wore this style the following day.

That night, I moisturized and sealed with Jane Carter Solution leave-in conditioner and Ampro Vitamin E oil. In small sections I detangled again using a Deman brush. Over the course of the day my hair shrunk back up so more detangling was necessary. I'd rather detangle my own hair then to have the braider try and I get upset because she isn't doing it properly.

Soon after each section was detangled, I twisted them.

Before the installment of a style that will be in for 1-2 months, ALWAYS be sure to:

  1. Thoroughly wash your hair
  2. Trim if needed
  3. Deep condition using a moisturizing and protein conditioner
  4. NEVER use heavy products before braid/twist installment. It will create buildup.
I'll post pictures tomorrow of this finished product!
