When did you BC or when do you plan on Bcing?
I did not do a “Big Chop” but transition out from a perm over 10+ years ago and I have not looked back.

A short regimen you can share?
I rinse my hair with warm water before shampooing to loosen any dirt and debris. Then I shampoo/condition with my products, Shea Butter Moisturizing Shampooand Shea Butter Conditioner by Dominique’s. Next while my hair is still damp, I spray a little of my Hydrating Hair Mist with Aloe and Geranium.  This helps maintain moisture, softens and adds sheen. Next Hairdress (optional) I would massage about a “pea” size of Hair Replenisher or Hair Butter by Dominique’s into my scalp to the ends of the hair, then style as usual. If your hair and scalp is very dry then the Hair Replenisher would be my recommendation.

Do you have any Favorite Products?
I prefer my products, Dominique’s Aromatherapy Hair & Body Care Products because they have natural ingredients and they have a proven track record of moisturizing and conditioning the hair and skin.
·         Jojoba Hair Oil-Flagship Item ( 1st Item on the Market)
·         Shea Butter Moisturizing Shampoo & Shea Butter Conditioner
·         Hairdress: Hair Butter & Hair Replenisher
·         Hydrating Hair Mist
·         Scalp Stimulator-Hot Oil Treatment
·         Facial Silk-Night Facial Moisturizer
·         Jojoba & Lemongrass Cuticle Oil
·         Orange Vanilla Body Butter and many other items…….

Do you have any advice on going Natural?
Regardless, if you transition out from a perm or do a “Big Chop,” it is very important to be patient and use natural products that can hydrate and moisturize your scalp and hair. In many cases when your hair has been chemically treated, it would need gentle care to be restored back to its “natural state.” Therefore, choose
products which are dedicated to hair health. In my opinion, please stay away from products that have silicone, alcohol, mineral oil, sulfates, parabens and any other chemical drying agents.  Also, massage your scalp on a regular basis, which can help increase scalp circulation and redistribute the natural oils in your hair too.

How long has your company been along? What made you start your own business?
I have been in business for 15+ years.  I believe I was led by God to step out on faith to start my own business.  I've worked in Corporate America in the marketing field for many years building successful multi-million dollar territories.  I remember feeling successful on one hand and unsatisfied on the other hand.  So I began praying to God to use me to a higher level.  After waiting for God's directive, He led me out of the corporate world to do Massage Therapy.  Massage Therapy has been a major platform to help people feel better on all levels.  Also, five years ago, this career has allowed me to expand my aromatherapy hair and body care line with many opportunities to speak publicly about the importance of good health and wellness.

What makes your products differ from others?
I have been a successful Massage Therapist for many years and I understand the affects of stress on the scalp, hair and skin.  Also, I have incorporated recipes from my mom, a former Cosmetologist, who I helped make a hair dress for people who had scalp conditions (hair loss, hair shedding etc) when I was a child. Therefore, I coupled all my knowledge to make the finest aromatic and healthy products from nature to help soften, moisturize and protect your hair and skin.

How long have you been natural?

May 2012 (last relaxer Sept. 2011)

Why did you go natural?

Relaxers made my hair super thin.As I got older  it got progressively worse.

When did you Big chop?

May 2012

A short regimen you can share?

Every two days before my shower I put castor oil at my roots and massage.I no longer use a shower cap.I let the mist of the water and heat from shower serve as a hot oil treatment. It works wonders to soften and moisturize.I do not rinse it out.

How long have you been natural?

I have been natural for 2 years and 2 months. My anniversary is May 24.
Why did you go natural?

I went natural mainly for a change, something different. I was never really interested in being natural but my sister was going natural. She would encourage me to watch videos of fellow vloggers and tell me that my hair would look just like theirs. Eventually after I did her big chop, I decided that I too would go natural.
When did you Big chop?

My original big chop was on May 22, 2010. My sister was the first person to cut my hair. In an effort to keep some of the length, she shaved the back and sides but left the front long. The results were horrendous. There was no way that I could rock natural hair in the back and relaxed hair in the front. I contacted a friend on mine and on May 24th, she shaved my entire head.
How did you decide to create a YouTube Channel?

I was always one who got tired of the same hairstyles. Even with my TWA being edgy on its on, I eventually wanted something different. After countless hours of research pictures and videos of a variety of hairstyles, I simply decided to create my own styles and publish videos. When I first did my big chop, it was  difficult to find information about short natural hair. My goal was to create that outlet for others just like me.
Was natural hair always the main focus?

Natural hair was never really my main focus. My main focus was always to take what I had and enhance it to the best of my abilities. That included my dress and grooming as a whole.
How do you feel about having over 30,000 YouTube subscribers?

I get asked this question quite a bit and I honestly don't feel any different. In reality, I am no different from anyone else. I do feel like I have a purpose and that brings my extreme gratitude.
What things can you say have helped you become successful?
The main thing that I feel as helped me is being humble, honest and genuine.
Do you have any future goals for your hair and channel?
My future goals for my hair are to hit bra strap length with in the next two years. I definitely think that that is a reasonable goal for my hair.   I also want to condense my regimen so that I continue to use the same products and simplify it. As far as my channel goes, my goal is to reach 50,00 subscribers and continue to create helpful videos that will keep people excited about having natural hair.
A short regimen you can share?
I wash my hair once a week with shampoo bars. I deep condition at least twice a month. Every time that I wash, I condition and apply a leave in conditioner. Then I add a butter and usually do a twist out. Rarely do I ever do braid outs or bantu knot outs.
Do you have any Favorite Products?
My favorite products tend to change about every 6 months or so. After a while of using a certain product, my hair doesnt seem to respond to it as well. Currently, my favorite product is Afroveda Hemp Seed butter and Jessie Curl Too Shea.
Do you have any advice on "Going Natural"?
Natural hair is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get! Go for it! If you want to go natural just try it and if you don’t like, go back to a relaxer. Be patient and give it some time to adjust.

How long have you been natural?

I've been fully natural as of February 2012

Why did you go natural?

After I saw the movie "Good Hair" I decided the chemicals in relaxers were no longer acceptable to put on hair. I had one last relaxer in February 2010 and then I transitioned.

When did you Big chop?

I was transitioned for 2 years. I just couldn't see myself cutting off all my hair.

A short regimen you can share?

I pre-poo, wash and deep condition once a week. I also baggy my whole head a few times a week.

Do you have any Favorite Products?

I am a certified Product Junkie so I am all over the place but I can't live without my spray bottle with water and oils, my tangle teezer, coconut oil and almond oil.
Do you have any advice on Going Natural?

I say go natural because you want to learn how to care for your hair and not because it's the latest trend. Realize that is will take work to find a regimen and products that work for you but that it's worth it all in the end.

How long have you been natural?

I have been natural for almost 3 years! Wow! Time flies!
Why did you go natural?

I went natural because I was changing my lifestyle, and becoming more healthy. I started working out... A LOT and I wasn't able to keep my hair straight and healthy with the relaxer. I was getting my hair done every week, and it was messed up the very next day after my work out. I'd had enough.
When did you Big chop?

I did my big chop on November 17th, 2009! Haha! I remember the exact date because it was pretty traumatic. I didn't plan on doing my big chop that day. But I was washing my hair and the relaxed hair with the natural hair... it wasn't working for me that night, and I ended up with a big tangled mess. lol! I was crying and frustrated, and I started cutting. I called my husband at work, and he came home and helped me finish cutting my hair! *bigsmile* It's funny now, but it wasn't at the time! lol! :0)
How did you decide to create a YouTube Channel?

I watched so many videos! I lived on youtube! Finally I decided to stop just 'watching' and start documenting my journey! I wanted to do it to help track my progress for myself, and then people started watching and commenting on my videos! It was so exciting!
Was natural hair and fitness always the main focus?

At the beginning, natural hair was the main focus. But the more  videos I made, the more people started asking about my fitness routine. So then the fitness aspect came about.

How do you feel about having over 16,000 YouTube subscribers?

It feels amazing. It's a blessing. I love interacting with as many people as possible! I feel bad sometimes, because I want to respond to every single comment, but I just can't. I do read every one! I really appreciate my subscribers and they make me smile. I like talking with them and learning together.
What things can you say have helped you become successful?

YouTube itself has helped me become successful in many aspects of my life actually. It takes me out of my comfort zone and I've found myself in places and doing things I never though I would go or do. I'm an introvert and I usually like to fade into the background. But YouTube definitely pushes you to the forefront! Haha! That's for sure! It's helped come out of my shell quite a bit! It is uncomfortable, but that's good right!? Because if you're always comfortable, then you're not growing.
Do you have any future goals for your hair, wellness, and channel?

Well, I've had  a lot going on with family and personal things lately, so I haven't been able to be as active with making videos, social media, meet ups, etc as I'd like to be. But things should be calming down this month, so I am SUPER excited to get back in the swing of things! I've been recording, so I have lots of editing to do! haha! I plan on getting back to uploading on a regular basis on my natural hair channel, as well as fitness. I'm excited! *bigsmile*
A short regimen you can share?

I keep it simple! About every two weeks, I shampoo, condition, and deep condition. Twist my hair, and I usually wear it that way for the week, in different protective styles. Especially while I'm training. I rinse my hair just about daily, and co wash during the week as well. That's about it!
Do you have any Favorite Products?

Let's see... I absolutely LOVE the Argon Oil Deep Conditioner and My Honey Child Scalp Cleanser. Those are my staple products for the moment!
Do you have any advice on "Going Natural"?

Uuummm... the best advice I can give would be to have patience and enjoy your journey. It might get frustrating at times, but it's well worth it. Also, do what you can to research what your hair likes, instead of just trying to mimic other peoples routine. That can lead to a lot of wasted money on products. It's nice to use someones routine as a baseline to get started, but consistency is key. If it works... stick with it. If it doesn't change one thing at a time so that you can tell what works and what doesn't.

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural since December 18, 2009. Seems like just yesterday I did my own big chop in my bathroom, well with the help of my Mom.

Why did you go natural?
I went natural because my hair was over processed and I never saw any growth past my shoulders. My hair is also naturally thinner than average so I could never achieve the volume that I wanted. I researched transitioning natural hair for about a month or so than decided that I would grow it out until it got to a length that I was comfortable with. I have the patience of a 2 year old so I ended up big chopping at about 3 months into my transition and rocked a TWA. I loved my little curly afro. I LIVED on CurlyNikki forums for the first year and a half of being natural. I learned so much from the ladies there.

When did you Big chop?
I big chopped on December 18, 2009. I'll be coming up on my 3 year anniversary very soon. Time has gone by so fast, it definitely doesn't seem like its been that long.

Describe your hair:
My hair is a mixture of about 3 textures. In the front, is loose and wavy. On the sides my hair is curly "s" type curls and in the crown and the nape I have very tight coils about the size of a #2 pencil.

Tell us a little about your site Love, Destinee
I started my blog last summer (June 2011) out of sheer inspiration. I was getting heavy into makeup and didn't have anyone to share my thoughts with. My friends aren't as enthusiastic about makeup and hair as I am. I needed to get out my thoughts so that is where Love, Destinee came into the picture. It was only originally about makeup but I've expanded it to include hair as well as lifestyle issues.

Do you have any other sites?
I had a site for natural hair but I deleted it because I didn't have the time to devote to one site, much less two. I'm going to try to get back to blogging on a regular basis as I have fallen all the way off. I do have other Social Networking sites like Twitter (@lovedestinee11), Instagram (@lovedestinee11) and Facebook (Facebook.com/lovedestinee)

Do you have a signature style?
I wouldn't call it a signature style but my favorite style to wear is a flat twistout out on blown out hair. I love the definition I get from wearing flat twists and the volume from the blowout.

A short regimen you can share?
As I've gotten further into my journey, my regimen has gotten very simple (probably out of laziness, more than anything) It is as follows:
Shampoo: every two weeks
Co wash: every week and a half
Moisturize: 2-3x week (if wearing my hair out)
Style: every week and a half

Do you have any Favorite Products?
My all time favorite product is Aussie Moist conditioner. I haven't found another product, especially as inexpensive, that keeps my hair as moisturized as Aussie. A new favorite is Curls Unleashed Leave In. Smells awful but is moisturizing and gives great definition. I also like anything by Oyin Handmade. Their Hair Dew and Burnt Sugar Pomade are the best!

Do you have any advice on Going Natural?
I would say do what works for you. In the beginning of my journey I was buying up every product I could find and trying every technique that I saw. Although those were fun to do and it was all trial and error, I spent a ton of money on things that didn't work for me. Find what works for you and stick with it!

How long have you been natural?

I BC(big chopped) on April 2011, and I stop getting relaxers May 2010.

Why did you go natural?
I started going natural in an effort to grow healthier and thicker hair. My younger sister did her BC, and as I saw her grow I was in love so after almost a year of transitioning I decided to BC. You can actually watch my BC on my Youtube channel. Re-watching it is a hilarious experience now. lol Click on the link below to see how my BC went down!

When did you Big chop?

April 2011. It was actually a few days before my wedding.

A short regimen you can share?

I co-wash twice a week. I do a DC with my favorite conditioner and my steamer. My hair absolutely <3 my DCs:) Then I style. I call it the "Basics".

Do you have any Favorite Products?

I am a product junkie and I am confessing it all of you today. I need help. lol My favorite products change every few months. My new "FAV" is SPA Haus Salon Conditioner from Dollar Tree. Yes I said Dollar tree. Its has a great slip, and I will not cowash and detangle without it. I also use it to DC. It makes my hair feel like feathers. My curls scream "Thank You" after I put it on. Everyone can afford to try it because its only a....wait for it...... $1! lol

Do you have any advice on Going Natural?

Embrace the journey. Everyone's journey is different, but I must say that it will only be as good as you make it. Have fun in the experience. Don't give up when it gets tough during the transition because the final product is worth every bad hair day.

How long have you been natural?

I have been natural for two years and two months, and it has definitely been a learning experience for me.

Why did you go natural?

I went natural because my hair was truly unhealthy after years of applying a relaxer. My hair is already fine and fragile, and combining that situation with a relaxer and constant heat was detrimental to my hair causing an unnatural amount of breakage that left my hair both limp and damaged.

When did you Big chop?

I did my BC on a whim, and I chopped my hair on May 29, 2010. I had transitioned for 5 months prior to that, and I was just too fed up with my two textures to keep that process up any longer…lol

A short regimen you can share?

Daily:

I usually spritz my hair with an Aloe Vera Juice and Water mixture and seal with Jojoba Oil.

Weekly:

First, I like to deep condition my hair with either Lustrasilk or ORS Hair Mayo on dry hair. Then I cowash with Tressemme Naturals. I detangle my hair with Kinky Curly Knot today. After that, I will moisturize and seal as usual or use a styling product like Taliah Waajid’s Curly Curl Cream to style my hair in braids or twists!

Do you have any Favorite Products?

I absolutely love Tressemme Naturals Conditioner, and I could not live without my Olive Oil Ecostyler Gel.

Do you have any advice on Going Natural?

YES! :) First, I would advise anybody thinking about going natural to be willing to research natural hair methods and techniques. You have to know a variety of ways to deal with natural hair because the first method you try might not work out for your head of hair. Natural hair is trial and error! The next thing is you have to be willing to appreciate the curl that grows out of your scalp. It’s okay to be inspired by other naturals, but don’t expect your curl pattern to be an exact replica of theirs. If that’s your only reason for going natural, then that might not be the best bet for you, and lastly, find a support system. Whether it’s your close friend or online youtube friend in your mind. You’ll have lots of questions that need answers, and it’s just nice to have someone more experienced helping you along the way!

How long have you been natural?:
I've been natural since November 2009.

Why did you go natural?:
As I matured, I came upon a discovering of self. & as soon as I accepted myself, flaws and all, I began my transition into becoming a natural beauty. Besides, growing up reading about the Black Panther movement, and DuBois philosophy,.  grew up with a mother that taught me the importance of my African roots, by introducing me to elements of the culture and heritage, as well as the need for understanding and acceptance of others. As a grew into aesthetics, I began to love myself more... and my hair is my crown, as I am a queen.

When did you Big chop?:
In November of 2009. I was a junior in high school, and my science teacher, Ms. Ma'at Lands started the natural movement in my high school. Her hair was more of a 4C. I loved it.

A short regimen you can share?:
I wash my hair once a week, and every month I try a new home recipe every other month or so. Currently, my favorites are: a deep conditioner including mayonnaise, olive oil, a bit of cheap conditioner like Tresemme, and an egg; coffee rinses and mixing shea butter and oils.

Do you have any Favorite Products?:
I absolutely love Taliah Waajid Curly Curl CreamTaliah Waajid The Great DetanglerTaliah Waajid Curl Sealer, all of which runs about $8 separately, and Carol's daughter lisa's hair elixir, which runs about $22 dollars.

Do you have any advice on Going Natural?:
Not to jock Nike... but, just do it. I love Indie Arie and all, and while I may not be my hair... but my hair is a part of my aesthetic. & I embrace beauty, fully.

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural since March 22, 2012 after a six month transition
Last relaxer September 2011

Why did you go natural?
I tried to go natural many times before without success.  I had long thick hair as a kid, but that all went away when I got my first relaxer at 9. It was a kiddie perm, but my hair still broke off.  To grow my hair back, my mother took the advice of a friend who was certain jherri curls would be the answer.  Needless to say they weren't, but it gets worse.  After a year, I was sick of the jherri curls so my mother took me to the hair salon and our longtime stylist had a brilliant idea, put a relaxer on jherri curled hair.  She told me to come back two weeks later for a treatment.  Keep in mind I'm about 10 or 11 at this point.  So my mother told me to go to the salon after school and she would pick me up when I was done.  When she arrived she was confused by the bill.  The treatment cost much more than she anticipated.  When we got home she asked me to explain what was done to may hair.  When I told her the stylist put white stuff that burned on my scalp she knew what had happened.  Our longtime stylist somehow forgot that she had given me a relaxer two weeks earlier and gave me another one.  When my mother tried to comb my hair it came out in her hand.  My edges were stuck to my scalp and I had scabs.  My mother had no choice but to take the scissors and chop.

It seemed like my hair would never be healthy again. It didn't grow much and I started to think I would never have the long hair I had as a child again.  I decided to stop relaxing at 15. I wore braids for almost a year and had gotten some good growth.  I wore twist outs, bantu knots or had it pressed.  This was the mid nineties and this look wasn't really in and I didn't know what products to use or how to care for my hair so eventually I caved in to the creamy crack.

My next natural attempt came ten years later at the age of 26.  At the time I was the Weekend Anchor at a TV station in Rochester, NY.  I had some bad experiences with scissor happy beauticians who kept chopping off my progress.  But transitioning on television is not a good look..  So I bought a wig and my boss liked it.  I kept my hair in braids underneath, but again I had no idea how to care for my hair.  I was job hunting at the time and my agent urged me to ditch the wig and relax if I wanted to find a new job and so I did.

I did finally start to learn how to take care of my hair and what products to use.  i began cowashing, stretching my relaxers, moisturizing and sealing and protective styling (mainly with weaves)  Doing this got me from neck length to bra strap in three years.  I knew then that my hair can grow and thrive with proper care.  Still I longed for the thickness that I remember having when I was a little girl.  I often wore clip ins to make up for it. Also stretching my relaxers helped me discover my natural texture.  I coudln't believe how wavy the new growth was. Still I was afraid to do it because of my career. A big chop would be a drastic change, but I figured there are so many women who have the courage to embrace their natural selves, why can't i.
Big Chop

When did you Big chop?
I Big Chopped March 22nd of this year.

A short regimen you can share?
Wash and gos are my main style. I generally co-wash with Tresemee Naturals Moisturizing Conditioner.  I use Kinky Curly Knot today as a leave-in.  I seal with jojoba/olive oil and style with Kinky Curly Curling Custard.

Do you have any advice on Going Natural?
I think the biggest fear that many of us have is how other will react.  My husband was not a fan when I first got it cut, but now he loves it and calls me curlyq.  I was even nervous about wearing it on-air.  I wore a wig to work for weeks after the chop until finally I decided what the hell, I'm going for it. The reaction at work was overwhelmingly positive.  I realized that I had nothing to worry about.  We spend too much time thinking about will others accept it, but we are the one's that have to accept it, love it and rock it with confidence.

How long have you been natural?
I've been natural a little bit more than 3 years

Why did you go natural?
It wasn't by choice honestly. When I signed with my first Modeling agency it was decided that my most marketable look would be my natural hair - only problem was that I normally wore my hair long in weaves. So it was pretty traumatizing after seeing all of my hair being chopped off and me feeling like a little boy lol ...Needless to say, that's what books me for most of my work, and I adore my "nappy" hair! ^_^

When did you Big chop?
As soon as it was decided to be my "look". I didn't have any time to even prepare for it!!

A short regimen you can share?
To be honest, I don't do much to my hair. Usually my hair is done and taken care of by a Stylist when I Model, but I make sure I twist my hair up with a Curl Sealer 2x a week. I use a Curl Spray daily before taking my hair loose. A healing mask once a month, and wash my hair accordingly!

Do you have any Favorite Products?
Well right now I'm one of the faces of Organic Roots Stimulator's new hair line Curls Unleashed - they're products are awesome! I'm also a big fan of Sofn'Free - they have a new line called "Nothing But" that's targeted for the Curlies!! :D

Do you have any advice on Going Natural?
It's going to take some time getting used to. A lot of women are uncomfortable chopping all of their hair off (as I was). Our natural hair is our race, our culture, our history - And society has taught us that it wasn't good enough. That it's inferior. I wasn't yet comfortable with my natural hair, so as a "coping method" I wore wigs, extension braids, etc. And it honestly took validation from other people for me to become confident enough to just wear my natural hair all the time. THAT'S when I started developing a true sense of self-love for my hair and my culture. Screw validation elsewhere. That doesn't mean I'm "anti-weave", I still like to have fun with my hairstyles, change it up, and wear it different ways... It's just that NOW I'm not wearing the weaves TO be pretty. I know I'm rambling a bit, but this is the main concept I keep in my head when it comes down to "our" hair: "People always have a greater yearn for something they can't have. Our race is the ONLY race in the world that can grow our hair in this texture. And THAT'S what makes our nappy hair pretty bad ass" :)

Jealous yet? Hair envy maybe? Yeah I thought so.lol

2.5 years on May 12.

Why did you go natural?

I wanted to redefine myself after losing me in a horrible relationship. I'm a role model to young girls and mentor to up and coming professionals and I wanted them to know its okay to be who you were born to be. As a Mental Health Professional and Adjunct Professor, I knew it was time to show the world that I can be who I was born to be and maintain my professionalism.

How long have you been natural? I have been natural for 15 years, 9 yrs. Afro and 5.5 yrs. locked

Why did you go natural?
I went natural for 3 reasons:
1.There were natural women all around me in the South. Beautiful brown people with cottony hair, wavy hair, short hair and long hair, equally proud and natural.

2. A friend of mine was thinking of going natural and had begun doing research. I joined in the search with her, and we, along with other ladies from a Mom's group, transitioned together.
3. It wasn't cost effective for me to get relaxers anymore. I was going long periods of time between them as it was, and my hair was NEVER the kind that would get bone straight. I'd do a wash and blow dry and have this fluffy, full-bodied hair and began to fall in love with my volume. So I ditched the relaxer kits and products used to stay curly, etc and went natural.
When did you Big chop? I did the Big Chop in 1997, shortly after my second child was born.

A short regimen you can share?I wash my hair once a week with Cantu Shea Shampoo followed by applying Daily Doctor Leave-In conditioner and sealed with coconut oil or olive oil. I just added massaging castor oil to my thin-by-nature edges to my regimen, to see if I can grow a little more hair to incorporate into my front locs. I have traditional locs and I maintain them once every 2 months with a latch hook, on damp hair. I follow up by oiling my scalp with a blend of Raw, unrefined Shea Butter, Castor Oil & Peppermint Oil (not whipped).
Do you have any Favorite Products? Yes 100% Coconut Oil, Raw Shea Butter, Olive Oil and Daily Doctor Leave-In conditioner ( the leave-in, I have been using since I went natural!)
Do you have any advice on Going Natural?
Yes, I have 10 basic rules of thumb I like to share because going natural is as much a mental process for many as it is a physical process, and I want to encourage others to make an educated decision and to be patent throughout the process.
  1. Think about it first
  2. Do some research
  3. [Then]make a decision
  4. Don't rush your transition
  5. Do the Big Chop only when you are ready( And when you do, you may decide you aren't sure about it :)
  6. Do more research by hands on experience, trial and error
  7. Exercise patience when caring for and styling your hair
  8. Develop an initial regimen
  9. Keep it simple
  10. Enjoy your hair

How long have you been natural?
1  year and 1 month
Why did you go natural?
The chemical in my hair from relaxing it were causing me to lose hair. My hair was unhealthy and brittle.

When did you Big chop?
I did 2 chops actually. I did the first one in June. I cut off 6 inches and let it grow. I hadn't had a relaxer since feb of 11' and then in February after letting it grow and doing transition styles, I cut the rest of the processed hair off.

A short regimen you can share?
I co wash twice a week, and every morning I wet it with a water/oil solution, define the curls with gel and coconut oil.

Do you have any Favorite Products?
I love my EVOO and Coconut oil. I like my Motions leave in conditioner. It's amazing.
Do you have any advice on Going Natural?
Be ready to commit. About half way through the process you may wan tot break down and go back to relaxers, but hang in there. It is So worth it.

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural since I was 17 years old and I just turned 26 this past December.

Why did you go natural?
I went natural because I had a horrible salon relaxer experience. I left the salon with a scalp sensitive to the touch. I also had numerous scalp burns, mainly on the sides of my head. It was just disgusting, just oozing yuckiness! I also had a patch of hair in the middle of my head that would continuously break off. It would never grow and I was pretty self-conscious about it.  Since going natural my hair FLOURISHED ! I don’t have those same problems.

When did you Big chop?
I didn’t big chop. Actually, when I went natural I had no idea I was “going natural.” I just new that I was NEVER EVER going to get another relaxer. I had a long transition with various braid styles. Since I have never said to myself, “Self, you are going natural” along with transitioning with braids, it was a pretty easy transition for me. The only times I was sort of confused on what to do with was when I would remove the braids for a rest period before braiding my hair back up again. After my braid phase I decided to loc my hair and I had locs for 4-5 years before I combed them out. Yep, combed them out. It took me an entire week. Combing out my locs FELT like a big chop, I had gone from APL to a few inches in a matter of weeks. Shocking to say the least. I learned a lot about my hair that year !

A short regimen you can share?
Wash every 1- ½ weeks (Deep wash with either Bentonite Clay or a clarifying; other times moisturizing shampoo)
Deep Conditioner every week (detangling while deep conditioning)
Using supplemental treatments (tea rinses, acv rinses, etc)
Steam my hair or co-washing for extra mid-week moisture boost.
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS Sealing. I used the L(iquid) O(il) C(ream) Method.
I protective style and let my kinks fly free as I see fit.
Overall I pay attention to what my hair needs and I do what she asks !

Do you have any Favorite Products?
I am an upstart product company, so I mix a lot of products for myself and to potentially market. So other than those I  love Shea Moisture products, Cantu Products, Aloe Vera Juice/Gel and different types of butters.

Do you have any advice on Going Natural?
I would have to say be patient with your hair! You pamper yourself, so do the same with your curlies, treat it like silk. Most importantly, have fun while going natural and learning abour your hairs needs !

Stay strong!  You will have so many people go against you developing natural tresses!  I recommend to BC (aka Big Chop)! If I could do it all over again I would have started fresh with a fade!  I would have wigged it out if it felt too uncomfortable.  Dealing with both hair textures can be a pain!

How long have you been natural?
I went natural in 2002 after I grew tired and frustrated of spending so much time and money on my hair. When my hair was relaxed, it would go through this vicious cycle, where it would grow then break off, then grown then break off some more. Finally, I met a stylist, William of W Salon in Boston, who told me that I didn’t need a perm and that I could start pressing my hair.  I decided to stop pressing my hair and wore a wig for two years. Although I was natural at the time, I was never fully comfortable with wearing my own hair until one life changing episode happened. You can read all about it in my new book Thank God I’m Natural: The Ultimate Guide to Caring for and Maintaining Natural Hair available onlineat www.tginsore.com or get a sneak peak online at Amazon.com.

A short regimen you can share?
I like to keep things simple. I wash my hair once a week with Elucence’s Moisturizing Benefits Shampoo and Conditioner. I’ll then apply a little Knot Today to my hair to help withdetangling with a wide tooth comb. I have found that if I use a wide tooth comb instead of my Denman, I can preserve my curl pattern and increase curl definition.  I’ll then twist my hair with Shea Moisture, Coconut Oil, and Aloe Vera Gel. I’ll leave the twist in for a couple of days, take them down and mist them just a little to get some fullness. Kinky twists are my go to protective style. There easy and convenient. I also like to get my hair trimmed every 8 -10 weeks. I found that when my ends are clipped and my hair is shaped up nicely, it grows so much faster. Finally, I sleep with a silk scarf or bonnet and then in the morning I'm good to go. It's a fairly simple hair routine. However, I have been natural for a while, so I've got it down to a science.

Do you have any advice on Going Natural?
Like so many black women, there was a point in my life when I spent so much time, money, and energy on trying to achieve hair that looked nothing like my own. It impacted my exercise schedule, my love life, my finances, and more. When I finally decided to let go and love the hair I was born with, I experienced a peace like no other.  It was like everything came into focus, and I could finally say Thank God I’m Natural. . . . This is just the way I’m supposed to be.

Tell us a little about yourself and your book (concepts, idea, etc)?
My name is Chris-Tia Donaldson and I was born and raised in Detroit (7 Mile). I went to Harvard for College and for Law School, and now I’m a lawyer for a software company. Right now, I work with a talented and dedicated team of people, who help me to balance my full time job with the demands of running an all natural personal care products company whose mission is to empower black women to live healthier natural lives.

At this juncture, our primary focus is to help educate women who are thinking about going natural learn about the benefits of making this choice, as well as giving women the resources and information not only to take care of their hair naturally, but their bodies as well.
I decided to write the book after I started working at Jenner & Block.  At Jenner I felt like I could be true to my natural self and still be successful in corporate America. I had spent almost a quarter century wishing for hair that looked nothing like my own, and  thought I couldn’t wear my hair in its natural state, because my tresses looked nothing like Alicia Keys’ or Mariah Carey’s.  When I came to the realization that I could go natural, I wanted to share all the information I learned about caring for my hair with others. I also wanted to let the ladies know that going natural would not put an end to their career, prevent them from getting a date, or require them to join the “movement”.

Stay natural,

Chris-Tia

I am Sophia Kornegay aka “SophiaK” Owner of SophiaK Essentials. I have been hand making natural hair and skin care products since 2007. My line of products are made with natural and organic ingredients and I am geared at promoting healthy hair and skin. I make all products with my target customers in mind.

Hair Products
I decided to go natural in July 2008 just after getting out of Marine Corps (Honorable Service) because I was already caring for my two daughters hair as well as my Husband who had decided to start locs a month prior. I felt if everyone in my home is natural I might as well do it, but I did it because I wanted to not because I felt pressured or forced.

Before making my line of products I really didn’t use many products to even have favorites, so I would have to say the products I formulate and make are my favorites. I know exactly what I am making the products for and what is going into that product, no blinded ingredients.

Her advice:

My biggest advice is to make sure that you are going natural because you want to or that you have thought it out. Being natural is more work than going to the salon for someone else to style your hair; it’s a lot of work. It might seem daunting at first but the rewards are much better after you understand your hair and what it needs.

Some of the keys to retaining hair length is to have a balance of moisture and protein in hair, this is essential because having too much moisture or little protein can cause damage, leading to breakage. Does not comb hair when it is dry and don’t pull hair too much when combing when wet either. Hold the hair at different spots when combing out a specific area. Also try to keep hands out of hair by less manipulation, find a style and keep for at least a week. Very important to trim hair if you see split ends because those strands will become brittle and also make the hair easy to break because of splitting in two.

How long have you been transitioning?

I have been transitioning for 5 months. My last relaxer was July 2011.

Will you Big chop? If so when?

Yes, I will eventually big chop. I plan on doing it sometime in July 2012 so hopefully it won't be much of a big chop.

Why did you go natural?

I went natural because I wanted to try something different with my hair and I just have a love for naturally, curly, hair. I always found my hair to be boring when it was relaxed. Plus, relaxers are not good for hair.

Do you have any favorite products?

Cantu shea butter moisture, Elastaqp deep penetrating remoisturizing conditionerGinseng miracle wonder 8 oilParnevu leave-in conditioner
(I've never heard of the Ginseng miracle wonder oil, I'll have to try that!)

What styles do you wear?

I love bantu knots. I tried twists outs a couple times. I would love to try braid outs as well as flexi rods.

Do you have any questions about the transitioning process? (I am sure someone can help!)

Yes, I would like for someone to tell me how to use flexi rods and just general tips on ways to keep my hair healthy and make it grow faster?

How long have you been natural?
I've been natural about 5 months now.

When did you Big chop?
I big chopped in July. My hair was mostly afro with these ugly relaxed strands, so I got them cut off.

A short regimen you can share?
I co-wash with Hello Hydration, then I two strand twist my hair with Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and leave it in over night. In the morning, I untwist, put some Olive Oil in my hair, fluff it and go.

Do you have any Favorite Products?
My favorite product has to be the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. It makes my hair really soft and leaves it hydrated for a couple of days.

How long have you been natural or transitioning?
I have been transitioning for about 3 months. I realized that my hair was severely damaged and seriously wanted happy, healthier hair. I started transitioning in May.

When did you BC or plan on BCing?
I BC'ed on May 25. I was just so frustrated with my hair, constantly breaking off. I had plan to transition for a year but I was fed up, thus Monroe was born. I still h
ave a bunch of relaxed ends but it's okay

Well when I have my twa, I usually co-wash with Hello Hydration by Herbal Essences about 2-3 times a week. I apply Shea Moisture Curl Milk and apply olive oil or jojoba oil, then apply my styler, whichever I plan on using that day. Once a week I wash with Hello Hydration by Herbal Essences, and DC with whatever is handy.

Right now I have in kinky twists, so I basically just focus on MOISTURE! Moisture is the key to healthy, happy hair!

Do you have any favorite products?
I LOVE Shea Moisture Curl Milk, and Kinky Curly Curling Custard! And I also love Hello Hydration Condish! I'm dying to try Carol's Daughter products.

How long have you been natural or transitioning?

My last relaxer was Oct 19, 2010. I transitioned for 9 months. My goal was a year but I just couldn't take the maintenance of the 2 textures.
When did you BC or when do you plan on Bcing?- I BC'd July 14th, 2011. I wanted to do it the night before but I didn't think I had a steady enough hand. So when my husband went to Great Clips the next day for his 'summer hair cut', there was a girl with locs working and I knew it was destiny!

A short regimen you can share?

I switch things up a lot. Usually, I cowash daily, shampoo & deep condition every other week. There are a bunch of conditioners I like. Recently, I've been using the Kinky Curly Curling Custard as my styler. To make sure I don't get a lot of build up from the KCCC, I've been cowashing with Suave Professionals Invigorating Clean Conditioner in Rosemary + Mint. (I like this stuff better than WEN). I shake the excess water out of my hair before I get out of the shower. Then, I use Oyin's Honey Hemp conditioner as a leave in. I rake it all over my head using my fingers. Next, I take about a bean size of the Kinky Curly Curling Custard and apply it in 3 sections. (back, top-right, top-left) Lastly, I add Sweet almond oil to get rid of the crunch. If it's not raining, I stick my head out of my car window a few times on the way to work to dry my hair. I know that sounds nuts, but it dries and creates volume!

How long have you been natural or transitioning?
I've been natural since April of 2011 when I went through an accidental BC.

When did you BC?
I Big Chopped on April 2, 2011. It wasn't something I had planned on doing at all. If anything, I was totally against going natural. I had a weave in my hair for about three months & decided I needed it out immediately. Got the weave out, took out my braids & washed my hair. Little did I know was during the taking out of my braids, I had left one right in the center of my head. One of my friends sat with me for about 2 hours trying to detangle the ball of permed hair that sat in the center of my head. I ended up telling her to just cut off the big knot in my head, so she did. I remember taking a look in the mirror & seeing all my natural hair looking so lively, while the pieces of permed hair she had managed to detangle laid flat on my face looking dead ass ever. I would say I had about 1.5 inches of natural new growth at the time. I told my friend to cut off all the permed hair & I haven't looked back since.

A short regiment you can share.
One thing I realized that works for me -- The simpler the better. For the first four months of being Natural, I survived off of Wash & Goes. I'd co-wash w. Aussie Moist, apply my Giovanni Direct Leave-In, Seal moisture in w. my purified water + EVOO + Argan Oil mix & use Eco Styler for styling purposes.

As my hair is now getting longer, I live off Two Strand Twist. I pretty much still use all the same products used for my wash & goes. Just lately I've been experimenting with more products and oils. I've also stopped using EcoStyler on my hair & just use it for my edges only. Kinky Curly Curling Custard now replaces the EcoStyler for me.

Do you have a favorite product?
One of my favorite products for this Summer would definitely be Avalon Organics Clarifying Lemon Shampoo & Conditioner. I use both on wash days & it leaves my hair feeling extra clean as well as has a nice shine to it. I also love using the Conditioner alone on my co-wash days, as it gives my hair great shine, moisture & plus the smell rocks.

Do you have any advice on going natural?
There are a lot of Natural hair articles, recipes, forums, blogs, videos & what not out there. The best advice I can give is to listen to your hair & find out what works for you. A lot of times something that may work for someone else's hair, may not work for yours. You just have to keep that in mind. Also, being natural requires a lot of patience. It's going to take some time for you to really learn about your hair. There will be some ups and downs, but don't be discouraged. Growth will come eventually!

Be patient. It takes trial & error to perfect a regimen, embrace the free spirited nature of your new, natural journey.

How long have you been natural or transitioning?
I transitioned from Jan 22 to July 26. Then I chopped it all off.

When did you BC or when do you plan on Bcing?
I BC in July 26, after taking out my last sew in. I had sat watching videos on on youtube for hours. I especially loved Nikkimae2003and NaturallyCandi. After watching those two and few others and seeing the growth that they accomplished, how happy they were, and just how beautiful they looked I knew I could do it. So I locked myself in the bathroom and spent about two hours cutting out tracks and cutting off the relaxed ends. I emerged out the bathroom, and my boyfriend said your beautiful. I didn't have the sense of shock some people speak of. I did doll if up a lot the next day but that wasn't out the norm for me since Im a self described MAC addict.

A short regimen you can share?
I co-wash now with whatever conditioners(mostly a mix ofHEHH,Aussie MoistNexxus Humectress) I have in my shower. I'll shampoo every week and use a ACV-Apple Cider Vinigar- rinse. Then as soon as I get out the shower, tshirt dry, then seal immediately with EVOO-Extra Virgin Olive Oil- or whatever oil I have laying around.

Do you have any Favorite Products?
I love Shea Moisture products, the curl smoothie, and the hair milk. My hair loves EVOO as well. I have also turned into a PJ-Product Junkie- buying any and every conditioner there is. HEHH is my friend lol.

Do you have any advice on Going Natural?

My advice is to make sure your ready for this. Its easy in a sense but it takes a true commitment to keep it moisturised especially after BC. You can't just let it go because your natural now. A week after I BC a 2yr natural saw me and asked me what I did to my hair. Her hair was drier than the desert. I told her what I knew, but this is what I'm saying if your want your hair to flourish you have to take care of it. Remember that anyone can do this, no matter what type of hair grows from your head, no matter your body type, or head shape....YOU CAN BE NATURAL.

It's good to see the younger generation (like me!)

How long have you been natural or transitioning?
I've been natural basically my whole life. My dad let someone give me one of those kiddie perms when I was 2 and I got a texturizer at age 9. Beside that, I've been relaxer free. So Bree, my hair, and I have been together for around 17 years.

A short regimen you can share?
I'n a very lazy person so I do things when I feel like it. I usually wash my hair every week or every other week. I love sulfates & cones so I try not to go long periods without shampooing.

Usually I'll condition, DT, detangle then apply my leave in  before plaiting my hair up as I find my hair dries quicker this way. In the morning I put a light oil on my hands then unravel and fluff. I like to keep things simple. I'm a busy yet lazy teenager so time is of the essence.
I usually rock a braid out for 2-3 days then l'll do a Bantu knot out, followed by a puff or bun towards the end of the week.

I love, love, love braids & other extensions! It makes my life so much easier. It's just wake up and go hair. I usually wear my hair like this 6-9 months out of the year just for convenience.

Do you have any Favorite Products?

Let's see, for washing & conditioning I love Creme of Nature and ElastaQP  products. Bree loves the Shea Moisture smoothie & style milk. I've been using coconut oil & EVOO since I was a child and they've never let me down;however, I've recently fallen in love with Sweet Almond oil & Tea Tree oil. I use a moisturizer called One Bottle 6n1. It works great for twists and just keeping the hair moisturized. For hold or to sleek my hair back I'll uses a mixture of Eco Styler and AVG or Curls Control Paste. Oh and KCCC and KCSS are some of my favorites as well.

I like to alternate products but those are my main ones.

Do you have any advice on Going Natural?
Listen to your hair. Find out what it likes and doesn't like. You'll avoid a lot of heartache in the end.

Stay true to yourself. Do what's best for you. Everyone is  different. If you find out somewhere along the road a relaxer is easier for you, don't feel guilty. It's your life and it's your hair.

How long have you been natural or transitioning?
I have been natural/transitioning since December 2008. This was my second attempt after my stylist was against it. She did not want to maintain my 4c hair.

When did you BC or when do you plan on Bcing?
I never BCed. I already had very short hair so I just grew it out and keep my ends trimmed. Eventually, I trimmed the relaxed ends off.

A short regimen you can share?

I wash my hair every 1 -2 weeks. I listen to my scalp; if she itches badly, we wash. If not, we wait until 2 weeks. My hair was trained to be washed weekly while I was relaxed, so she knows when it is time. I currently use Bee Mine Ayurvedic Herbal Bar or Queene Helene Royal Curl shampoo (new product, love it so far). I deep condition after every shampoo, usually 4 – 12 hours depending on my next style. I use Bee Mine Deep Conditioner or Queene Helene Royal Curl with honey, EVOO, and castor oil.  I will twist my hair or put in braid extensions depending on the mood with some mango or Shea butter. I rarely wear WnGs because my hair dries out so quickly. Oh wait…I use castor and coconut oil to seal the moisture. I keeps it simple.

Do you have any Favorite Products?
The Bee Mine line: It works great in my hair and my daughter hair.

Do you have any advice on Going Natural?
It is not a war with our relaxed hair friends. It’s a choice so embrace it. It is rough as with anything in life but it will get better. Do what works for you at all times. I would love to wear all the styles I see the other Naturalistas wear but my hair says NO!. She is simple and will remain simple.
