Healthy Living: Why you Should Drink Lemon Water Every Day

Hey Curlies,

Did you know you can use lemons for just about anything? Well, not everything but fresh lemon has so many uses for the home and your body.

I've began including lemon water into my daily regimen and I've seen a great change in my energy levels and immune system.

Some people prefer to drink their lemon water warm and people like me just like to pop a lemon into a glass whenever I think about it.

Learn why you should include lemon water in your daily regimen and an easy trick on how to save time here.

10 Ways to Help your Hair Grow with a Little TLC

Hey Curlies,

I get constant questions on how I've grown my hair out over the past seven years. My answer? A little TLC, some time and patience is the formula. That may not be the secret to long, healthy hair you were looking for, but it's true.

When I first did my big chop in 2011, I had the smallest little afro. Today you wouldn't believe that.

Four years of natural hair growth - ClassyCurlies

To give you some satisfaction, I've come up with a list of 10 ways you can help your hair grow just by giving it some tender loving care.

10 ways to grow your hair - ClassyCurlies

1. Deep condition at least every two weeks - with a plastic cap, plastic bag or a Hot Head.
2. Experiment with clay washes to free your hair of the chemicals traditional shampoos and conditioners can carry
3. Treat your hair to a cassia or clay treatment every couple of months - they promote shiny, strong hair
4. Don't forget to give your front edges and nape some love
5. Detangle your hair in the shower using a shower comb - it will eliminate the frustration you have when attempting to detangle after your shower
6. Avoid washing your hair in the sink unless you have these two items
7. Don't neglect your scalp. Got a dry one? Apply some coconut oil directly and massage
8. Learn the perfect time to trim your hair. You don't want to trim too often or not enough
9. Make your hair regimen as simple as possible and stick to it
10. Treat your body right - practice self care, drink lots of water and lean on healthy foods for strength (your hair will grow like a weed...trust me)

Top 3 No Shampoo Clay Cleansers for Curly Hair

Hey Curlies,

Sure there are a lot of shampoos on the market promising clean hair, but there are also other hair cleansers that can not only get rid of build up, they can replace traditional shampoos, conditioner sand deep conditioners.

Over the past year I've tried a couple of "no-shampoo" clay cleansers for my curly hair and have found a couple make my list of favorites.

RELATEDListen to Curly Conversations Tuesdays at 7 p.m. | Healthy Living: Skin Care Products I'm Loving Right Now

So if you're not convinced on why you should try a clay wash here are some pros:
  • Clays are all natural and you won't have to worry about harm chemicals
  • They leave your hair feeling soft, not stripped and brittle like some shampoos can
  • They can replace your typical washing, conditioning and deep conditioning products
Cons? There really aren't any. You will obviously notice the difference in texture since clay washes are...well clay and not shampoo, but they get the job done.

So what are some of my favorites?

Moroccan Rhassoul 5-in-1 Clay Treatment by NATURALICIOUS
This product acts as a cleanser, conditioner, detangler, deep conditioner and leave-in conditioner - yes, all in one bottle. I first used this product last year and I achieved one of my favorite twistouts because my hair was so moisturized.

Urbanaire Gypsy's Cray Cray Clay Cowash
Not only does this clay wash cleanse, detoxes and conditions, it also smells like heaven - mint chocolate. It is infused with ingredients like Moroccan rhassoul clay, coconut cream, raw organic cocoa powder, avocado oil and murumuru butter.

Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay
This jar will contain just plain ole' Bentonite clay which is perfect for creating your own DIY hair masks and cleansers. Whip up a clay wash with some of your favorite oils like sweet almond oil, coconut oil, along with other ingredients like apple cider vinegar and water.

Natural Hair: How to Create a Jumbo Flat Twist

Hey Curlies,

Sometimes I get so caught up in the newest products and styles that I forget about the basics - like how to flat twist.

I posted a video on Instagram of me creating a jumbo flat twist and all of a sudden - everyone wanted a tutorial.

With that request, here it is...exactly how I achieve my jumbo flat twist:

This style was done on stretched hair. This is very important to achieve the "jumbo" part.

Side note: I apologize if I sound extra dry in this video (lol). I recorded this voiceover around 6 a.m. and didn't realize how dead I sounded at the time.

Naturally Perfect Dolls earns $200K investment on Shark Tank

Hey Curlies,

I wanted to share some awesome news I came across in our community this past week. Naturally Perfect Dolls earned a $200K investment while appearing on Shark Tank.

Naturally Perfect Dolls is operated by a black mom who was tired of hearing her daughter tell her she did not like her hair texture. She began by creating one doll that looked like her daughter years ago, and now she has four different dolls available.

Recently the company received a $200,000 investment while on the show, how awesome is that?!

This time last year, I wrote about the importance the new 2016 Barbies of color and why they were, and still are, essential for black girls.

Hearing about this investment in this black-owned, woman-owned company just puts the icing on the cake for me. It shows we are making progress.

Natural Hair: What you Need to Know Before Going Natural

Hey Curlies,

So you've decided to go natural? (I'm guessing that's why you're here reading about what you should know before going natural).

In my seven years with natural hair I've learned a lot, and some of it I wish I had someone tell me along the way.

Going from straight, relaxed hair to embracing your curly strands can be a journey and I want to help make that as easy as possible for you.

5 things to know before going to natural hair- ClassyCurlies

Here are 5 things you need to know about going natural:

1. Once you big chop, you may not have the reaction you'd thought you'd have to your new style. This can be a major adjustment, especially if you're going from long to short hair. You may think you look completely different. You may love it or you may hate it (I hope not), but while you can't prepare for your exact reaction, you can prepare mentally by saying, "I'll be OK with whatever the outcome is."

2. Your family and friends may not like your hair. I realized this quickly once I cut my hair and my grandmother didn't seem too thrilled with my decision. She asked, "Can you straighten it?" and she said, "What did you do?" Long story short, not everyone will understand why you made this decision but that doesn't matter, and you shouldn't feel like you have to explain yourself to people. As long as you are OK with your next step...let the haters hate.

3. It will be trial and error to figure out what products work. Everyone's hair has potential to look amazing, but it's just a matter of figuring out what styles and hair products your hair likes. It can and most likely will be frustrating, but just remember "this all takes time." If you're looking to sample multiple products for a low price, you might consider ordering a CurlKit - a monthly subscription kit that sends you 5-7 samples (and many times, full-sized hair products).

4. Get a camera. This may sound super basic, but your hair will grow and you'll transform along with it. Unfortunately, it hard sometimes to reflect on where we've been because we can't see our progress - this is what pictures are for. When I first big chopped, I took pictures with my phone every month for years. Now I can look back and actually see my progress. It feels so good to know you're on the right path.

5. Expect an emotional transformation. For me, "going natural" was something I wanted to do for not only my physical appearance, but I wanted to discover more about "me." After learning of all of the chemicals in hair relaxers, I began eating healthier and watching what products I put onto my skin. Overtime my big chop helped me see me for me and nothing else - and I can truly say I am happy with that. I feel more balanced, centered and emotionally connected than I ever have before.

So I've got to ask, for those who are not new to natural hair, what did you experience after going natural that you didn't see coming?

Share your experiences with in the comment section below or on my social media pages (@ClassyCurlies).

5 Minute Swinging Flat Twist for Curly Hair

Hey Curlies,

Sometime ago I wore what I call a "swinging flat twist" and I've gotten loads of questions about how this style is done. It is basically a loose flat twist done on an old Curlformers set.

This easy protective style took only five minutes to do and didn't require any combs or products - just your fingers and a couple of bobby pins.

I shot a quick tutorial so you all can see how it's done.
