ClassyCurlies Top 5 Natural Hair Products of 2016

Hey Curlies,

I’ve come across some awesome natural hair products this year. I don’t know what made 2016 different, but companies have really stepped up their game.

Because the best natural hair and curly hair products are always of interest, I thought I’d put together a list of my top five favorite natural hair products of 2016.

In no particular order:

Top five natural hair products - ClassyCurlies

NATURALICIOUS

I was introduced to Gwen, the founder of Naturalicious, earlier this year and she is such a joy to be around. While she is the first black woman to hold a patent for a natural hair product, her Hello Gorgeous Hair Care System was designed to cut down your wash day. Using this system, I got one of my best twist outs to date!

My Favorite: Moroccan Rhassoul 5-n-1 Clay Treatment

Honey Baby Naturals

This brand found a special place in my heart after I learned the story behind the products. Founder Aisha Crump has been in the beauty industry working with several of the brands we know and love for over 15 years. In 2015 she decided to create her own hair and skin care products and they are some of my favorites - I use all of them. The Honey Shea Hair Smoothie is how I achieved this popular bantu knot out.

My Favorite: Knot my Honey Instant Detangler

Skinny and Co.

I randomly ran into the people at Skinny and Co. at my previous job where I was writing an assignment for the magazine I worked for at the time. I love that they use the “five ingredients or less” rule for all of their products, so you know exactly what you’re going to get - no surprises. While this isn’t a brand specifically for curly hair, I love to use their coconut oil on my hair while styling and on my scalp as well.

My Favorite: Coconut oil. Get yours here.

Madam CJ Walker Beauty Culture

Remember that bangin’ wash n go I did back in September? I can credit that to the Madam CJ Walker Beauty Culture hair products. I never had much luck with wash n goes but the Coconut & Moringa Oils Hair Gel helped me gain some “wash n go confidence." I also got this awesome twistout using another one of their styling products.

My Favorite: Frizz Fighting Coconut & Moringa Oils Humidity Block Curl Gel

Urbanaire Gypsy

Talk about something that’s meant to be: I met Stacy, the founder of Urbanaire Gypsy at the Taliah Waajid Natural Hair Expo in Atlanta earlier this year. We chatted for a while and I tried out her line of products. She has one of the best no shampoo, clay cleansers on the market, and that’s the truth. It smells like chocolate first off, and it cleanses your hair without stripping your natural oils.

My Favorite: Cray Cray Clay Co-Wash

10 Natural Hair Topics you Loved in 2016

Hey Curlies,

This happens to be one of my favorite - and shown to be one of your favorite - times of the year.

At the end of each year I pull together some of the most popular natural hair topics found on ClassyCurlies. These are the most viewed hair care posts you loved. Some of them have to do with styling, and others are natural hair DIY projects.

If you want to see topics from year's past, click here and here.

This list could've went on forever but I had to limit myself.

Finally Arrived: Skinny & Co.

Hey Curlies,

It has been a long time coming, but it’s finally here - my items from Skinny and Co.

On Black Friday, the company had a BOGO free sale, and of course I couldn’t pass it up. If you’re not familiar with this brand, they sell high-quality coconut oil products. I use several of their products for my skin and hair.

From the sale I ordered:

-8oz coconut oil (free item)
-Coconut oil pulling kit (includes: lip balm, wooden spoon, peppermint coconut oil for pulling)
-Rose whipped body butter

I’ll continue to incorporate the coconut oil into my hair regimen and you’ll specifically hear more about the oil pulling method in the Healthy Living section.

What type of coconut oil do you all use on your hair?

Curlformers on Long Natural Hair

Hey Curlies,

Just wanted to drop by and show you the results from my latest Curlformers set.

I washed and conditioned my hair using Honey Baby Naturals shampoo and conditioner. To treat my hair, I deep conditioned with the conditioner for 30 minutes then did a coconut oil rinse.

It took about an hour to install the Curlformers and since I was on a time crunch, I sat under the dryer for a little over an hour.

I've got to admit, Curlformers look great, but they don't last long (for me at least). Maybe two days tops. I was OK with this since the day I styled was a special date.

Happy Birthday, Victoria!

Hey Curlies,

Yesterday I celebrated ClassyCurlies.com's sixth birthday, and today I'm celebrating my own. It has been a wonderful journey of growth and life lessons thus far. I am extremely blessed to be where I am today.

That's all for now.

Oh yeah, people keep asking about this bun. I styled it with a hair lotion from Nycole Naturals.

My plan is to do a quick Curlformers set before dinner today. *fingers crossed*

Happy 6th Birthday ClassyCurlies.com

Hey Curlies,

Can you believe it? Today is ClassyCurlies.com's 6th birthday!! Where did the time go, seriously?

On this day six years ago I wrote my very first blog post and many, many things have changed since then.

Initially I created this blog because I was curious about my natural hair texture and I loved to write, that's it. But over the past six years it has evolved into something greater. It has become a platform for several other women to showcase their challenges, their successes and their hopes in their beauty and personal lives.

I have also changed over the years as a blogger. If you've been following for a while, I actually started this blog in college (actually, the year before I went to college). It's a time where you're really trying to figure things out, and you can definitely see the development over the years if you start at the beginning until now.

Sometimes I go back and read some of my old post and they sound so terrible (lol), but I don't do much changing because that's part of the growth - seeing your past.

Throughout it all, I balanced books, graduation, being a manager at my first big girl journalist job and that leads me to now.

I am so, so thankful for the loyalty of everyone who reads this blog. Everyone who has been reading and everyone who is going to read.

My goal isn't numbers. I thrive off of the engagement I get with you all, and I try my very best to answer every single email and social media comment - because it's important. I want to be accessible to you all - that's my job.

Because of you (and just a little of my writing skill - but mostly you lol) ClassyCurlies.com has been:

Those are just the big things, you can see the full list here.

You all seriously have no idea how thankful I am to have the support for something I am so passionate about.

SO WHAT'S NEXT?

Shhh....no one knows this yet, but Curly Conversations (the podcast I mentioned last month) kicks off Jan. 10!

More natural hair events are coming your way

Of course I can't tell you everything, but trust me, 2017 is going to be the best yet.

Thank you so very much,

Does the Acceptance of Natural Hair Vary by Generation?

Hey Curlies,

Over the summer I had someone ask me whether if I thought hairstylist were "going out of business" because of DIY natural hair bloggers and vloggers.

My answer...of course not! Heck, they're probably getting just as much attention as we are.

While I love teaching women (and some men) how to style and care for their hair, let's be real, not everyone wants to or has the patience to do their own hair. It's a skill perfected over time.

To get down to the bottom of it, I chatted with Britteny of KurlyKoils Hair Studio. She is a licensed cosmetologist who specializes in curly hair.

RELATEDNatural Hair: What you Need to Know Before Going Natural | Listen to Curly Conversations Tuesdays at 7 p.m.

In this video we talk about:

  • Do the positive thoughts on natural hair vary by generation?
  • Where do hairstylists fit into the natural hair community?
  • What does a consultation look like? (not everyone is trusted to touch your hair)
  • And more!

I'd love to hear your thoughts, do you think the acceptance of natural hair varies by generation? Are some younger people more open to curly hair?

Healthy Living: How I Shop for a Vegetarian and Carnivore

Hey Curlies,

So if you haven't noticed, I'm pretty much a healthy eater about 90 percent of the time. My boyfriend on the other hand...let's just say we're complete opposite when it comes to food.

My idea of a snack is a piece of fruit and a bottle of water. His idea of a snack is donuts and chips.

You get where I'm headed here?

We eat completely different, which can make grocery shopping difficult. I usually shop alone because I'm more likely to stick to my list. When he comes along, we act like we're millionaires and the cart is overflowing.

(By the way, I shop weekly since I buy a lot of fresh items)

So, how do I shop for someone who is almost vegetarian, and for someone who likes meat?

Here are three things I like to do to keep our household under control and both of us happy. If you're in the same situation, I hope this helps you as well.

ClassyCurlies' Christmas for Kids Donation

Hey Curlies,

I just wanted to drop by and give you an update on the ClassyCurlies' Christmas for Kids program.

In a previous post, I mentioned for every comment I received on my social media platforms, I would give $1 to a child in need (up to $100).

Ladies (and gents), I was completely overwhelmed by the response.  Below is the response from just Instagram alone, then there was more on Facebook.

It's safe to say ClassyCurlies' Christmas for Kids was a complete success! Just so you know, the money was donated to Reach For Youth last Wednesday - $100!

Thank you to EVERYONE that commented and helped donate money to a child in need. You have no idea how much I appreciate it!

Happy holidays!

Natural Hair Curly Mohawk in 20 minutes

Hey Curlies!

I wanted to stop by and show you this super cute natural hair mohawk style I put together in less than 20 minutes! It turned out so well and I'll definitely be doing this style again.

This past week I wore a puff , but before then I created a cute bantu knot out style.

UPDATE: Want the tutorial? Find it here.

HOW I GOT THE LOOK

I began by washing my hair with the Honey Baby Naturals Shampoo, then following up with their softening conditioner. I left the conditioner on and used a new tool, the Hot Head Deep Conditioning Cap (look out for this review coming soon). I deep conditioned for about 30 minutes.

After a cool rinse I detangled and split my hair into three ponytails (yes, I styled on damp hair), securing each with a hair tie (the ones without the metal piece).

I then created a few two-strand twists in each ponytail using Honey Baby Naturals Honey Shea Hair Smoothie, then set the twists on flexi rods.

I let the rods stay in overnight and much of the morning before taking them out.

In the morning I untwisted and separated the curls for some volume.
