Hairstyle of the Week: Loose Waves on Natural Hair

Hey Curlies,

Just wanted to update you all on this week's natural hair style of the week. To create loose wave I washed my hair with Bask & Bloom's Gentle Herbal Cleanser and conditioned with TRESemme Naturals Conditioner .

loose waves on natural hair

I after twisting on damp hair I applied Bask & Bloom's Leave-in Conditioner, then followed up with Bask & Bloom's More Moisture Cream before twisting. I split my twists into two sides and banded each side together as shown below. Banding helped stretch my twists out to give off the "loose waves look." Unbanded twists would have shrank and resulted in very defined texture.

I then crisscrossed the two sections in the back and pinned them down. I wore my hair like this for about three days. This morning I untwisted, fluffed and moved on.

Sneak Peek: Large Satin Bonnets by Angel Bonnets

Hey Curlies,

large hair bonnetsI got a special, customized gift in the mail and it's a satin bonnet from Angel Bonnets! I've always wanted my own, large satin bonnet.

If you have big and long natural hair you already know the struggle with traditional store-bought bonnets. They don't fit your head and often cause your hair to shrink and lose shape. It's like... what's a girl to do?

large satin bonnets

I met the creator of these bonnets while attending a natural hair event in Toldeo, Ohio. I was really excited to find a bonnet that could fit my big hair that day. I also appreciated that the small business is Black-and-veteran-owned.

I will be conducting a formal review of my Angel Bonnets satin bonnet within the next two weeks, I want to give enough time to wear it.

I'll be back soon but in the meantime, check out these bonnets for yourself!

UPDATE: Watch my formal review on video.

ClassyCurly Motivation

Hey Curlies,

This week's ClassyCurly motivation is all about surrounding yourself with people you admire, those who have solid goals and determination.

The other day I was speaking with a friend and she was telling me how in her earlier years of life, she found herself hanging around the wrong crowd which in turn held her back from her goals and dreams. As we go into 2016, evaluate your environment and those you keep in your personal space. Ask yourself: "Are these people helping me lead the life I truly want for myself?"

Have a great Monday!

3 Curly Hair Care Tips for Holiday Traveling

Hey Curlies,

As the holidays are just days away, many of us may be packing overnight bags to stay at family and friend's homes for gatherings. Some are even taking vacations around this time. While you may have your holiday checklist taken care of– the gifts and the the advice on how to deal with your family – this isn’t a time to neglect your own hair. I have a few quick curly hair care tips to keep in mind while holiday traveling

Prepare ahead: A day or two before your travels think of a hair style you can wear that will require low maintenance if you don’t plan on dealing with you hair. Instal twists or braids beforehand. If it isn’t one of the two mentioned previously, things can still work in your favor. Whatever you choose, stick with it.

Pack lightly: Instead of lugging around your entire hair care stash, opt for smaller, trial-sized items. Check your local drugstore or Target to purchase small-sized conditioners, shampoos and stylers if you plan to actually “do” your hair while away from home. If you can’t find your favorite products in trial sizes, purchase empty petite bottles and fill your favorite products with them. Also, only bring what you need.

Don’t forget the necessities: No matter if you sleep with a head scarf, satin or silk pillowcase or bonnet, be sure to remember these items. They are indeed your friends and will keep your hair in tip top shape while enjoying your company. Necessities also include hair ties and stretch headbands. These can be used in emergency situations if you choose to put your hair up.

D.Kurl Rings: A New Way to Create Curls for Natural Hair

Hey Curlies,

While searching the web I came across a new tool to create curls for natural hair in a short amount of time – the  D.Kurl Ring, a hair tool to help create small spirals. While this tool has been mentioned in the community since 2013, it has recently picked up some extra attention. This seems to be perfect for those who complain about the amount of time it takes to install traditional rollers.

Here's how it works:

You can get a set of 12 D.Kurl Rings, which are 4 and a half inches for $29.95. Smaller rings are also available for shorter lengths of hair.

Is this something you're interested in trying? Leave your comments below.

ClassyCurly Motivation: Getting Through Tough Times

Hey Curlies,

This week's ClassyCurly Motivational post is all about encouragement to get through tough times.

As the holidays approach and some families and friends are gathering for the first time in months, it is wise to remember not everyone looks forward to these times of the year. Some are homeless, some are hungry and some are simply going through a rough patch but it is always wise to remember these difficult times help build character.

Have a great week!

4 Holiday Gifts for the Naturalista in your Life

Hey Curlies,

The holidays are right around the corner and some stores and online shops are having some of their biggest sales of the year. You may be wondering what kind of gift to buy for the naturalista in your life. If she is really into learning more about her natural hair or looking to try new products, I have just the gifts for her.
natural hair gifts

Following are a few gifts you may consider:

Aunt Jackie’s Curls & Coils Flaxseed Collection
This is the newest product line from Aunt Jackie’s and I’m pretty curious about it myself. The system, comprised of eight products, is said to be for all hair types and includes a cowash, conditioning masque, hair milk, hair butter, hair oil, flaxseed gel, curl whip and smoothing gel. I haven’t gotten a chance to try this line, but I have tried their original detangler, which was awesome!

Shea Moisture Hair Color
If your naturalista has been thinking about changing up their hair color, you may want to look into Shea Moisture’s Hair Color line. Customers have 12 shades to choose from including chestnut brown, bight auburn and golden blonde. I’ve used this system once previously to color my mother’s hair and it worked very well.

D.I.Y. Hair Kit
Every curly girl is constantly in need of basic hair items. I’m not sure if these items (bobby pins, hair pins, hair ties, etc.) get up and walk away during the night or what, but their always missing. If you’re looking to throw something together pretty quickly, try packing hair pins, detangle brushes, wide-toothed combs and hair ties into a decorative bag. I’m sure she will definitely appreciate it!

Fulfill her Wishlist
It doesn’t get any better than simply asking someone what type of gift they would like. It makes the shopping process much easier. Has she had her eye on a more expensive hair tool such as Huetiful Hair Steamer or a Q-Redew Hair Steamer? Maybe she’s had her eye on some of the lower-priced items like Curlformers or SSS Plates. Do some research and find out. Many of these places may also have bundles and holiday discounts available.

Natural Beauty Finds: Finally, an Organic Lipstick for Women of Color

Hey Curlies,

Meet Sylvia Burlock, the creator of Hello Beautiful! Body Care. I met her a few weeks ago while working on a work assignment to learn more about a new organic lipstick line she is creating specifically for women of color.

Sylvia Burlock
The original story I wrote on Hello Beautiful! is following and originally appeared on IndianapolisRecorder.com.

When searching the aisles of the makeup department in her community, 23-year-old Sylvia Burlock noticed one simple product was missing — organic makeup lines for women of color. That is when she developed the idea to create her own non-toxic lipstick line for women of color, Hello Beautiful!
“I learned about the lead in lipstick and the other toxins it contains through Campaign for Safe Cosmetics,” said Burlock. “I did a lot of research and development to come up with a product that didn’t have titanium dioxide, which is a chemical people can be allergic to and many people don’t know they ingest a lot of product by licking their lips.”
The name of the line, Hello Beautiful!, derived from a friend of Burlock, who constantly uses the phrase to greet others. She felt the name would inspire women to be their best and feel beautiful.
Hello Beautiful! Lipstick
The lipstick line, which features three shades — Ruby, Coral and Garnet — is said to be a cross between Bobbi Brown cosmetics and Ilia Beauty. Each color can be worn on its own or they can layer upon one another to achieve vibrant shades.

Currently, Burlock is seeking to raise $6,500 on Indiegogo to fund manufacturing and new packaging. The idea is to create eco-friendly packaging for the lipstick, which will cut down on the brand’s carbon footprint, mentioned Burlock.
Donators of $60 of more to the campaign receive Hello Beautiful! Lipstick colors Ruby, Coral and Garnet, a mixing guide, and a fair trade cosmetic bag. The donation period is open now through Dec. 22.
According to Kline, a marketing consulting group, in 2014 the multicultural beauty products market grew 3.7 percent in the U.S., outpacing the growth of the overall market for cosmetics and toiletries.
A study by the Selig Center for Economic Growth at the University of Georgia found the U.S. multicultural demographic makes up over a third of the population, and their spending power is growing more quickly than the country’s average.
“Today a woman almost expects to go to a brand she wants to buy and find her shade. It’s offensive to her when she can’t find her shade. It makes her feel like she’s not being recognized by the company,” said Sharon Collier, Cover FX’s president.
Several brands have emerged promoting beauty products for women of color, such as Mixed Chicks and Tyra Beauty, but Burlock said her products will differ as they will concentrate on organic ingredients.
“A lot of multicultural women don’t understand the impact those chemicals can have on their body over time,” explained Burlock. “It may cause cancer, and we may not know, but I really want to get into local stores to reach them and explain to them the product is specifically for them. I think once people understand the quality of the product, they will invest.”
Once the money is raised, Burlock hopes to gain product reviews from YouTube vloggers and beauty bloggers to help push the product to a national audience.
“I want to be able to create a product that reflects how diverse communities truly are,” said Burlock.

Hey Curlies,

It's the holiday season, which means you're more likely to see friends and family members you don't get to see often. While you hair can always be a topic of discussion, I've come up with a few tips on how to deal with family members who have negative comments.

Natural Hair Chat: Ava DuVernay Barbie Just in Time for Holidays

Hey Curlies,

Last week was definitely one of the worst weeks as I was involved in a car accident, but this week will be better...I know it :) I have a few posts lined up for you all, but first I wanted to start off addressing the Ava DuVernay Barbie.

Credit: Barbie Twitter account

I think this cute doll is seriously just in time for the holiday season....in fact it has been reported that the doll is completely sold out so I know it's a hot item on holiday lists this year.

So if you don't know who DuVernay is, she is the legendary director that worked on the film "Selma," which I loved. Fans pushed for an official Barbie doll and those at Mattel made some dreams come true! The doll is a one-of-a-kind and is one of six dolls based on inspirational women in the entertainment industry.

DuVernay announced the sale of the doll on Twitter earlier this month saying:

"Tomorrow this Ava Barbie goes on sale for Christmas because enough folks asked Mattel to do so."

In an additional Tweet she stated all proceeds will be donated to Witness and Color of Change charities. The doll was available at TheBarbieCollection.com. The doll was also briefly available on Amazon before it quickly sold out as well.

Barbie then Tweeted:
"We're excited to share that the @AVAETC #Barbie doll has sold out! Thank you all for your excitement and making this collab such a success!"

Although this has proven to be a rough time for African-Americans, there has been some great advances for the community. Good job Ava!

Did you order this doll? What do you all think about this? Leave your comments below.
