Natural Hair: Two Strand Twists Using Flax Seed Gel

Hey Curlies,

I hope you all enjoyed my flax seed gel tutorial. If you haven't seen it yet, click here. I couple of days ago I gave my hair a good wash and condition with my usual (Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil shampoo and TRESemme Naturals Conditioner).

twists on natural hair

This week I wanted to give my hair a rest and put some twists in. I thought about blow drying it first but then I decided against it because of time and the look I wanted to achieve. It's weird, sometimes I want to wear a shorter look. In that case I just style my hair while it's wet without stretching.

For my twists I used:
  • Butters-n-Bars Shea Butter
  • Flax seed gel
The last two weeks I had been wearing wash-n-go puffs so I did not detangle my hair. This detangling session was rough! lol.

Here are the results. I ended up creating a cute pin up style for work.

Natural Hair: Flax Seed Gel Tutorial and Benefits

Hey Curlies,

As promised here is my flax seed gel tutorial. Flax seed gel is an all-natural alternative to traditional hair gel and is much cheaper as well. Only cost me $3 per bag!

How to make flax seed gel for curly hair - ClassyCurlies

Why Flax Seed Gel?
  • Only 13 cents (per batch) to make
  • Great hold
  • All-natural (seriously)
  • Dries quickly
  • Easy to make
  • Rich in Omega-3
  • Doesn't flake
Traditional hair gels contain tons of alcohol and other harmful ingredients that cause dryness and breakage. While the texture of flax seed gel is a bit different, it still gets the job done!

Save your gel by storing it into a container with a lid into the fridge. This will keep your gel fresh for two to three weeks at a time.

Tips for creating your own
  • Be sure to not let the gel thicken up too much when making or it will be extremely hard to strain
  • You won't always gel all of the gel strained, that's OK
  • You can strain the seeds and gel using pantyhose or a tea strainer, the latter works best for me
  • Practice makes perfect
  • I purchased my seeds at Kroger in the organic/health food section
  • Tea strainers can be purchased at most grocery stores

Natural Hair: Wash-n-go Puff Using Flax Seed Gel

Hey Curlies,

A wash-n-go puff has been my go to for the last few weeks. I have been swamped with work these last couple of weeks. I work full time as a newspaper reporter so I'm constantly on the go.

flax seed gel puff

My line sister bombed my photo lol.

I didn't really take any "hair" shots because like I said, I've been super busy but I will say my curls were VERY defined! I've been using flax seed gel as an alternative to regular gel and my hair loves it! I have a video for you all coming this weekend.

I achieved my wash-n-go puff by washing with Shea Moisture's Jamaican Black Castor Oil shampoo, conditioning with TRESemme Naturals conditioner, spraying on ApHogee's leave in conditioner, applying an oil, then the flax seed gel.

Natural Hair: Curlformers Updo

Hey Curlies,

I am in desperate need of a sit under dryer. I have one, but I left it at my parents' house so the next time I visit them I will be sure to not forget it. I say this because I believe my curlformers set could possibly last longer if I used a dryer. No matter what gel or product I use, my curlformers sets are always flawless, however by day two it starts to get fluffy but I did find a cute solution.

My set the very first day:

I love this style because it stretches my hair, especially my roots which help when I desire a new look throughout the week. Actually my initial plan when I washed my hair was to do an updo style with the curlformers, but I figured why not style my whole head first?

That night I used the pineapple method to preserve the curls.

Here was day two and my updo style:

Long story short I kept my hair in the "pineapple" shape as much as possible while using bobby pins to keep the shape in place. All of the hair is gathered at the top of my head but I let the right side fall to one side.

I wore this style for about two days and the maintenance was a breeze. I just put my scarf back on the way I did the very first day.

Natural Hair: Curlformers using Eco Styler gel and Shea Butter

Hey Curlies,

I finally got around to washing my hair this week and I decided on some curls using my knock of Curlformers (haha) with Eco Styler gel and Shea Butter.
I washed using Shea Moisture's Jamaican Black Castor oil Shampoo and deep conditioned with Eden Body Works Jojoba Deep Conditioner. I then let me hair sit a towel for about 30 extra minutes before installing the Curlformers.

It took a little over an hour to install them. Here were my results:

I hardly ever separate my curls, but today I wanted to try something new...

Tomorrow I'm probably going to pin it in an updo, which was first intention, but I thought setting my whole head on rollers wouldn't hurt. Check back soon!

Natural Hair: Castor Oil Challenge Update #1

Hey Curlies,

This is the first check in for the castor oil challenege. I have been applying castor oil to my egdes every couple of days. It does help my edges stay soft, moisturized and slicked down when I take my scarf off in the morning.

I usually try not to brush or manipulate my edges too much to avoid breakage. Here was my latest style.

I haven't experiemented with applying the oil to my scalp just because of it's thickness, but how has the challenege been going for you?
I think it is serving me well. If you're new and want to joing the challenge, click here.
