ClassyCurly Profile: Lola

Hey Curlies,

Get in touch with the spring weather and be inspired! Here is the latest ClassyCurly profile.

Name: Lola
Social Media Names: @africanremy (instagram, twitter, tumblr)
Hair Type: 4a/4b
Afternoon tea

How long have you been natural?:
(I am) 13 months fully natural. Transitioned for six months prior.

Why did you go natural?:
I first relaxed my hair when I was 14 years old. Since then I had a number of different styles, and sometimes I never really felt like my actual hair was nice. The only time I felt like my hair was nice was when I was younger and my hair was big, soft and natural. I used to touch my new growth because I liked the texture and curls. So when I was 21, I decided to transition back to my natural hair.

A short regimen you can share:
I shampoo every other week and condition weekly. Oil and moisturize as necessary.
Natural pattern extensions added

What are some of your favorite products?:
My essential products are Shea butter, flaxseed gel (homemade), TRESemme Naturals shampoo and conditioner.

What are some of your favorite styles?:
FLAT TWIST STYLES! Either flat twist outs or protective styles with flat twists. They're so quick and easy. I'm quite lazy and its a quick style I can do before bed or work. Recently, I have  found a brand of weave that blends perfectly with my natural hair so now I have a new heatless go to weave style.

What is your most favorite and least thing about being natural?:
(My) favorite thing has to be the versatility and least favorite thing has to be wash day. Would rather spend that time eating/sleeping.
Red dress fun
What is one piece of advice that all women should have(pertaining to confidence)?:
If you like it, go for it! Don't worry what anyone else thinks.

What natural hair bloggers/vloggers inspire you?:
Laila (FusionofCultures on YouTube)
\Kandy (TheMissKandy on youtube)
Natural look

Do you have any advice on going natural?:
My main piece of advice would be to find out what works for you. It’s easy to try something that works for someone else and get discouraged when you don’t see the same results. Natural hair is so versatile and everyone’s hair is different so don’t be afraid to experiment to find the best combination of products/styles for you.

Natural Hair: My Hair Type

Hey Curlies,

I frequently get questions about my hair type. While I do try to provide lots of photos for you all, many of you haven't met me in person so you would honestly have no idea how my hair felt or actually looked.

Since we all can't technically meet over this blog, I'd figure I would simply describe my hair to you.

My hair explained:

I'm not truly into hair typing(meaning the chart), but if I had to choose any I would be considered a 4a. Most of my hair contains tiny spirals while other parts hold more of an "S" wave.

Over the years I've learned that my hair is easiest to manage when it is stretched. Many of the photos posted on here are of my hair in some kind of stretched style(mini twists, curlformers, braidouts). You will rarely see me rock a wash n go(did it once and it was just ok).
mini twists

Stretched hair is not only good for showing off length, but makes it easier to detangle.
My hair is also really soft about 90 percent of the time. The other 10 percent it just does it's own thing. As far as length goes, my hair is about bra strap length.

I do tend to get single-strand knots often which is why I prepoo or deep condition often.

Any questions? I'm here!

Natural Hair: Wash Day

Hey Curlies,

After three weeks of mini twists and one week of a twistout it was definitely time for a wash and detangle. Over the last couple of years of doing mini twists, I've learned that I would have no problem locking my hair if I wanted because it does so easily.
Mini twists
Yes, my hair looked great in a twistout but underneath, it was a tangled mess!

I started off applying Aussie Moist Conditioner generously to my hair, tying it up into a high bun and putting on a plastic cap for about 30 minutes. From there I detangled using a wide toothed comb in sections then headed to the shower to wash.
Wash day products
I washed in four sections and then detangled using a Deman brush to get the extra shed hair(not combing your hair in four weeks leaves LOTS of shed hair behind)

I braided my hair on soaking wet hair and let it set for two days(I wore a beanie). This style was particularly for a wedding I was attending (my line sister got married!)

Day 2
Crazy thing is, I didn't sleep with a scarf on last night (it was a long night. I told you I went to a wedding haha).

Natural Hair: Sunflower Oil (Guest Post)

Hey Curlies,

Here is an oil that can be used for both your hair and skin. Here is the guest post from CurlsKinksFashion.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I intentionally waited for the spring time to arise to talk about this oil. Some say it's a summery flower, but it reminds me of Spring. So let's get to the Beauty of this Oil
So for starters it is said that Sunflower oil is the second most commonly used oil in the hair industry. This totally shocked me but it does has some pretty good benefits for hair.
Hair: Sunflower oil is great for really greasy hair since it's lightweight it's great for settle moisturizing. So I guess this oil is good to maybe sheen up your hair while out in drier months.
Skin: Skin and Sunflower oil is a great combo. Sunflower oil is greatly high in Vitamin E and as you may know vitamin E is relevant to protecting skin from damage. Also since this oil is so lightweight it's great for skin it won't easily clog up your pore and cause acne.

I have never used sunflower oil but I might give it a try, will you?

Natural Hair: Thoughts on Flat Ironing

Hey Curlies,

That's an old picture...

Anyway, I will be getting my hair straightened for my college graduation in just a few weeks! I've found a stylist in my area that has much experience handling natural hair.

I'm actually kind of excited!

The last time I had my hair straightened was just about  four years ago, so this will be quite interesting. Yes, I am a bit nervous about heat damage and all that comes with that, but I'm actually ready!

Full photos coming soon!

Natural Hair: No More "Hair" Vitamins

Hey Curlies,

So the other day I was scrolling through my Instagram and noticed that much of my feed speaks of women who take vitamins specifically for hair growth, or a company that promotes them.

Late last summer, I participated in my first, and last 90 day hair growth challenge. This challenge required me to take hair vitamins daily and tracking my progress. While the challenge it's was entertaining, I think we are losing sight of the overall goal.

I do take a daily multivitamin and have for years, but not for the purpose of growing my hair. With so many vitamin companies now selling pricey bottle of promises of long and healthy hair, it's easy to get tangled up in the mishap.

I find it humorous that many of the ingredients found in these hair vitamins are found in your everyday foods(biotin, vitamins C,K, folic name it). So I feel like we are cheating the system for overall body health in return for paying big prices to these companies.

The creators of these products are aware of the hair care industry. They know how huge the market it right now and one of two things happens to the customer who purchases: one, they find the vitamins didn't help as much as they'd hoped or two, they see a difference and continue to feed into the market.

If we ate correctly, nourished our bodies with the fresh food available, we could achieve the same results. I'm not bashing my experience with hair vitamins. My hair actually grew about the same amount as it would on a normal month-to-month basis simply because of my diet.

Therefore, I will not be participating in any more "hair" vitamin challenges. Period. It's just a personal choice.

Natural Hair: L.A.C.E. Sweet Pea Body Soap Review

Hey Curlies,

This is another product I was sent by the people at L.A.C.E. I have reviewed a number of their other products in the past.

What it contains:

Distilled Water, Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Olive Oil, Avocado Oil, Sodium Hydroxide (Lye), Shea Butter, Mango Butter, Castor Oil, Sweet Pea Fragrance.

What it claims to do:

Cleanse,moisturize and soften skin

Cleanse, moisturize and soften skin

My review:

I wanted to wait until I finished the bar to review. This business has a hand-full of other soaps to choose from, but I love the scent of sweet pea and it was my two favorite colors!

The soap size was pretty big (5 oz) and it came wrapped individually with labels. The problem I usually have with all-natural soaps is the dryness that comes after and the lack of suds. This soap is the exact opposite and it’s safe to use on all part of your body.

It instantly suds-up really well which meant I didn't need to use much. The scent was pleasant and noticeable, but nowhere near overpowering.

I've used this soap almost daily since the beginning of February so it lasted about two months total. Pretty good I’ll say!  For purchasing information visit

Natural Hair: Avalon Organics Deal

Hey Curlies,

Just wanted to share with you all the great deal I caught a few days ago…

I’m actually beginning to dislike Walmart. Many of the stores aren't kept up well and seem just plain junky. With this in mind, I’m not sure how I found this deal beneath all of the clutter.

For only $5 this is definitely a good deal considering almost 70 percent of its ingredients are all natural. This is the exact brand I use for my face wash and I love it.

I will give these products a try later this week once I wash my hair. I can’t wait to take these twists down. Details soon!
