Natural Hair: My 2013 Black Friday Shopping List

Hey Curlies,

I hope you all had a SAFE black Friday. I know people usually get trampled on this time of year so I hope you made it back in one piece!

I decided not to participate in the madness and keep all of my purchases online. At first I didn't intend on buying anything however the promotional emails started rolling in and I couldn't help it. The good thing is, the majority of my money was spent on other people; which is the way I like it. It's the season of giving!

Anywho, their were few hair care and beauty items I purchased:

  • Another set of my Curlformers (knock offs-of course! lol)
  • Cassia Obovata
  • More natural bar soaps
Of course I ordered my knock off curlformers from I ordered another pack of 32 so I won't have to use flexi rods to finish the style. I purchased them for about $27. I have my earlier set in right now. Results tomorrow!
My last order from Butters-n-Bars
I also purchased Cassia Obovata from Ever since I did my last hair treatment with Australian pink clay and Rhassoul clay I've been dying to try Cassia. It is known to be the "neutral henna" because it does not color dark hair but it has the same benefits of henna. This includes natural conditioning and adding shine. Cassia is an all-natural powder.

My last two items were natural bar soaps by Hugo Naturals. I purchased the Shea Butter & Oatmeal soap as well as the Grapefruit soap at Ulta. I love my natural bar soaps. I'm actually still working on my last one from Whole Foods.

ClassyCurly Profile: Miss Spence

Hey Curlies,

Who said short hair isn't cute?

Name: Miss Spence
Social Media Names:  Instagram: @kinkycoilybeauty
Hair Type:       4c
URL: @kinkycoilybeauty
How long have you been natural?:
I have been natural for 4 months.

Why did you go natural?:
I went natural to commit to my self-beauty. I often felt lost with my relaxed hair--like I almost didn't know who I was. Returning back to natural has redefined myself as the beautiful black woman I was born to be, that God made me, as he has made us all beautiful in our own way. I also wish to inspire those who are lost and wish to commit to their natural self!

A short regimen you can share:
I two strand twist my hair every night using Beautiful Textures Curl Control Defining Pudding. Every morning, I refresh my twist with my homemade shea butter and EVOO/Castor Oil/Rosemary-Peppermint oil mixture. When I untwist ,I feel like a natural beauty!

What are some of your favorite products?:
Beautiful Texture Curling Pudding is definitely my favorite. I also love Shea Moisture's Shine and Hold Mist, as it aids me in holding my twist out styles.

What are some of your favorite styles?:
Twist Out/ Braid Outs

What is your most favorite and least thing about being natural?:
My most favorite thing about being natural is the ability to stand out and turning heads. There is not ONE THING I dislike about being natural!

What is one piece of advice that all women should have (pertaining to confidence)?:
Confidence comes from the inner self. Confidence is also a tool us women can use against others that don't believe in you or is having difficulty understanding your hair and why you wish to be different. However, if you have confidence and pride in yourself that you are beautiful, people will also thing the same! It all depends on how you carry yourself.

What natural hair bloggers/vloggers inspire you?:
Classy Curlies is my #1 blogger that inspires me. I am rather new to blogging. (Aww thanks girl!)

Do you have any advice on going natural?:

Always remember that natural is beautiful. Everyone's is. However, in order for people to believe in you, you must first believe in yourself. I would like to share this quote: "I don't understand why people say natural hair isn't for everyone. Its attached to your head! It can’t get more "for you" than that. Courage is the power to ignore the familiar."

ClassyCurly Self Confidence: #3

Hey Curlies,

With today's motivational post I wanted to focus on future goals an being content with who you are.

A lot of times we are so wrapped up in our future goals that we don't take the time to appreciate what we have. Other times we complain about what we don't have instead of appreciating the many things that we do have. The message in this is that everyday we should appreciate what happens in the moment and and be thankful for what we have. On the surface it may not seem like much sometimes, however if you dig a little deeper their are plenty of things to appreciate in life.

Natural Hair: Length Check(3 years, 4 months)

Hey Curlies,

I finished my 90 day hair growth challenge a few weeks ago and now it's time for a length check video. My last length check video was back in July. To watch, click here.

Here is my latest video:

Overall I didn't see a significant amount of hair growth. Yes, my hair did grow however I think that it still would have grown the same amount even without the vitamins.

I will say that my skin was very clear and I didn't get sick during my time taking the vitamins.

Natural Hair: Two-Strand Twists and Wash Day

Hey Curlies,

This past weekend I did some two-strand twists in my hair after washing. Here were the products I used:

  • Dominique's Enterprise Scalp Stimulator (pre poo)
  • Aussie Moist Conditioner(pre poo)
  • U R Curly Soya Shampoo(wash)
  • Aubrey Organics GPB Conditioner (conditioner)
I prepooed for about 15 minutes because my hair was extremely tangled from my wash n go then proceeded to wash.

It took me about 2 hours to twist my hair. I've been so naive. I continue to think that the more times I twist my hair, the faster I'll become at completing them. In reality, my hair is growing which prevents me from finishing at a faster pace.

Here were the results:

Natural Hair Care:3 Benefits of Two Strand Twists

Hey Curlies,

Tomorrow I will be washing my hair and putting in my handy and convenient two-strand twists.

I wear two-strand twists a lot just because my hair gets to experience all of the benefits from this style. Here are three reasons I wear two-strand twists:

  • Less manipulation equals less breakage which also equals length retention. Because I am not combing my hair daily or doing any heavy styling, I do not experience a lot of breakage. Just letting my hair "be" and keeping my hands out of it allows it to grow rapidly without any interruptions.

  • You can do a variety of styles with two-strand twist! I usually wear them down, however they can be pinned up. Depending on how small they are done, more styles can usually be done.

  • They are convenient! Not only can I roll of of bed and not have to pull out the styling tools or products, it is also a long-lasting style. I can keep my twists in from 2-4 weeks at a time.
Are you thinking about getting two-strand twists?

Natural Hair Style: Wash n Go and Defining 4a Curls

Hey Curlies,

While at work last week, I was talking with my boss and got an idea to try this "wash n go" affair. I've always wanted to try this style but my hair tangles so easy and the weather is becoming cooler. Basically I've always made an excuse lol. I decided to suck it up and go with it.

Before this idea, my hair looked like this...

Here are the products I used(in order):

  • Paul Brown Hupuna Conditioner (cowash)(not pictured)
  • ApHogee Pro-Vitamin Leave In Conditioner
  • Coconut oil (moisturize)
  • Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave-in Conditioner(moisturize)
  • Kinky Curly Curling Custard(to define my curls)
                Freshly washed hair
              No product

I used all of those products in that order. I purchased the custard almost a year ago but I haven't used it as much. I've read reviews about how the product causes crunchy hair when it dries. To fix this problem I applied a generous amount of coconut oil to each section before applying the custard to my hair.
          First section
With my hair already in halfs I began at the back of my head and worked in medium sections to rake and smooth the product on my hair. Most of the time the product gave me the results I wanted but every now and then I used my Deman brush to work the product through.

At the end of it all, I used a good amount of product. Here were the results with wet hair:

Once my hair dried(a million hours later lol) here is what I was left with the next day. My hair has CRAZY shrinkage so I knew it was coming and I prepared lol.

I was more than okay rocking a short style! The next day I styled it a bit differently...
Today here is what I'm working with. I ended up pulling it up into a puff.

To preserve my style from beginning to end I put a scarf around my edges and a bonnet to the rest. In the morning I sprayed with water and aloe vera juice then fluffed.
