Curly Hair: Should I Wash my Hair Everyday?

Hey Curlies,

I get the question "should I wash my hair everyday?" or "How often should I wash my hair?" very often. My answer always changes depending on the person's situation, but in general, here is my answer for curly girls.

Q: Should I wash my hair everyday?

A: No, I do not recommend that people with naturally curly hair should wash their hair daily. I am not saying that it is not possible, but from my experiences and research, that is my advice. By washing, I mean washing with a shampoo.Rinsing with water is different and will actually add moisture. Shampoos contain sulfates that strip the hair of its natural oils. To help combat this problem lots of people ,like myself ,turn to sulfate-free shampoos. Using products like these can dry your hair out and cause major breakage. Even sulfate-free shampoos can be drying if used everyday.

Curly hair is often drier than straight hair because the scalps natural oils do not get to venture down the hair shaft as easily as with straight hair. The scalps natural oils have a lot of twists and twirls to travel along, which is usually why the scalp is more moisturized than the ends of curly hair.

If you would like to cleanse your scalp daily, co-washing and using a cleansing conditioner is recommended  Cleansing conditioners are exactly what it says, they are conditioners that cleanse your hair just as well as shampoos. They also replenish moisture.

Here are a couple of suggested cleansing conditioners:
